THE VERAPACES

Explore Guatemala’s pristine natural wonders and venture into the spirit of the secret world “Xibalba”

THE VERAPACES

These two neighbouring departments are roughly situated in the middle of the country, and home to a variety of national parks and nature reserves, tea and coffee plantations, winding cave systems, and natural formed pools running with fresh, clear waters. This is a great area in which to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy some of our own natural wonders of Guatemala.

Things to do in and around the Verapaces:

  • Hike through cloud forest in search of the Resplendent Quetzal – the national bird of Guatemala which was sacred to the Maya and Aztec cultures
  • Enjoy a refreshing swim in crystalline limestone pools or an almost perfectly round lagoon within a national park.
  • Explore a variety of cave systems with intricate rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites
  • Float down a cave system on inner tubes
  • Visit an orchid farm to appreciate the extensive varieties found in Guatemala – if you are lucky you might find the rare Monja Blanca (White Nun) – national flower of Guatemala, in bloom
