HUEHUETENANGO & TODOS SANTOS CUCHUMATAN

Experience authentic Maya heritage deep in the western highlands

HUEHUETENANGO & TODOS SANTOS CUCHUMATAN

The Sierra de los Cuchumatanes extends itself almost in its entirety – some 400kms (250 miles) – within the department of Huehuetenango and is the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America. At its peak, the point known as La Torre stands at 3,837m (12,600 ft) above sea level.

Huehuetenango is one of the departments with the greatest ethnic diversity in Guatemala, though it’s most famous village by far is Todos Santos Cuchumatan. Many people are drawn to this village for the bizarre horse racing festival on November 1, Day of the Dead, and the fact that it is one of only two villages left, where the majority of the men still wear their traditional indigenous clothing on a daily basis, along with the women.

Textiles and fabrics from Todos Santos Cuchumatan are particularly striking – from the bright red stripy trousers, to the deep blue and green hues of the women’s huipiles (blouses) and the petit straw hats worn by men and women alike.

Huehuetenango is also a convenient connection for travel to or from Mexico if you are interested in visiting more than one country on your trip!
