COPAN (HONDURAS)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its intricately carved sculptures and where scarlet macaws often soar overhead

COPAN (HONDURAS)

Just across the Guatemalan border in neighbouring Honduras lies the lush evergreen Copan Valley, home to the quaint colonial town of Copan Ruinas, and not far beyond that, the Maya archaeology site of Copan (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Whilst many archaeological sites in Guatemala are famous for housing temples that tower far above the jungle treetops, or the largest monolithic monument in Mesoamerica, Copan is most notable for its magnificently detailed carvings and sculptures, including the hieroglyphic stairway comprised of over 1,800 individual glyphs which together form the longest known Mayan inscription!

Things to do in and around Copan Ruinas:

  • Explore ancient Maya archaeological sites and get better understanding of the ancient Maya civilisation
  • Visit a local bird rescue, rehabilitation & release centre to learn more about the rich Honduran bird diversity and endemic plants whilst wandering the botanical garden.
  • Immerse yourself in an agro tourism adventure – travel through more rural areas to a local finca for a day of horseback riding whilst learning about coffee, cardamom and cacao.
  • End an action packed day relaxing at the hot springs
