LA ANTIGUA GUATEMALA

Once the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala… an architectural jewel from the colonial era

LA ANTIGUA GUATEMALA

Nestled in the Valley of Panchoy and surrounded by three imposing volcanoes is the beautiful colonial city of La Antigua Guatemala.

Founded in 1543 by Spanish conquistadors, this charming cobblestone city was once the third capital of Guatemala known as the City of Saint James, and, for over two centuries, served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala, which extended from present day Chiapas through Costa Rica.

As a result of the Santa Marta earthquakes in 1773, much of the city including ornate catholic churches, sprawling convents and monasteries, and impressive government buildings, was heavily damaged, causing the final relocation of the capital city to its present day location. It was at this time that the city’s name changed to La Antigua Guatemala, which literally means “the old one”.

Today, La Antigua Guatemala is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bursting with history and offering endless activities and adventures. This is an excellent location in which to spend a few days enjoying a variety of activities, quality shopping, or simply to sit back and relax, and is definitely a must for anyone visiting Guatemala.
