RIO DULCE & LIVINGSTON
Flowing from Lake Izabal, Guatemala’s largest lake, out to the Caribbean is Rio Dulce – whose name literally means “Sweet River”. Sheltered in among the lush evergreen scenery and along the river banks are a few small riverside communities whose residents rely on kayukos (dugout canoes) to get around; quaint gardens of water lilies and several small waterfalls… no wonder it was the location of choice for the 1935 American film serial The New Adventures of Tarzan!
At the mouth of the river lies the coastal Caribbean town of Livingston, home to the Garifuna community of Guatemala and some of our most mouthwatering seafood dishes. From Livingston you are only a short boat ride away from the southernmost district of neighbouring Belize or the cruise terminal at Puerto Quetzal.
