LAKE ATITLAN
Some 80,000+ years ago, a volcanic eruption in the Guatemalan highlands and the subsequent forming of the present volcanoes around 10,000 years ago resulted in a caldera, creating what we know today as Lake Atitlan.
With three dormant volcanoes towering in the background and twelve indigenous Maya villages dotted along its shores, it’s easy to understand what has inspired authors over the years to describe Lake Atitlan as “the most beautiful lake in the world” and to say that “it really is too much of a good thing” – but don’t just take our (or their!) word for it… come and decide for yourself!
